By Vangie Beal A social structure made of nodes that are generally individuals or organizations. It took a little too long for Twitter to deliver an iPhone app. In fact, Twitter never really did. Instead, the company bought popular app Tweetie and built upon its platform (though it’s likely that whatever Tweetie code existed is long since gone). Today, the native Twitter client app’s utility and importance is undeniable. Having a dedicated app that Twitter could focus on and promote helped Twitter, for a time, experience almost meteoric growth. With its tabbed interface and sharp aqua design, it’s a rich app that highlights the best Twitter has to offer, while it makes it easy to discover the service’s newest features (hey, look at those Moments!). Twitter is now struggling to grow its user base, but there’s no question that little aqua bird and the iPhone have helped each other fly high.

The IBM PC takes us to 1981, with a host of both Mac and PCs being used throughout the 1980s. Multiple modems, followed by specialized telco hardware allowed multiple to many users online simultaneously. Compuserve and AOL were two of the largest BBS companies, and were the first to migrate to the Internet in the 1990s. Between the middle 1980s to the middle 1990s, BBSes numbered in the tens of thousands in North America alone. Message forums (a specific structure of social media) arose with the BBS phenomenon throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. When the Internet arrived in the mid-1990s, message forums migrated online, becoming Internet forums, primarily due to cheaper per-person access as well as the ability to handle far more people simultaneously than telco modem banks.

The “honeycomb framework” defines how social media services focus on some or all of seven functional building blocks. These building blocks help explain the engagement needs of the social media audience. For instance, LinkedIn users are thought to care mostly about identity, reputation, and relationships, whereas YouTube’s primary features are sharing, conversations, groups, and reputation. Many companies build their own social “containers” that attempt to link the seven functional building blocks around their brands. These are private communities that engage people around a more narrow theme, as in around a particular brand, vocation or hobby, rather than social media containers such as Google+, Facebook, and Twitter. PR departments face significant challenges in dealing with viral negative sentiment directed at organizations or individuals on social media platforms (dubbed “sentimentitis”), which may be a reaction to an announcement or event. In a 2011 article, Jan H. Kietzmann, Kristopher Hermkens, Ian P. McCarthy and Bruno S. Silvestre describe the honeycomb relationship as “present[ing] a framework that defines social media by using seven functional building blocks: identity, conversations, sharing, presence, relationships, reputation, and groups”.
Thanks for sharing, Ann! Really interesting to see inside your process. I think that the research-heavy, non-fluff articles are quite valuable as they stand out from a lot of the other content that’s out there to consume. Just my 2 cents. Would love to know what you think!
This article originally gave the wrong affiliation for Laura Warman, who is at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. It also stated that the University of California, San Francisco, uses VIVO-based profiles, when in fact it uses the same software as Harvard Catalyst Profiles. These have now been corrected.
With there being an increasing desire to focus on churning out engaging content using interactive methods, video is slated to be the next big thing for digital campaigns. With a growing mobile user base and lowered attention spans, one of the most effective ways to win at the social media game is with captivating videos.
The feeds would still be ranked based on what your are liking, sharing, and commenting on, and they’d still include personal updates. But the reorganization would make your reading interests, rather than your social connections, the focal point of the app. In short, Facebook would be transforming itself from a book of faces into a book of news.
This is another one that involves requesting a demo before you can sign right up and get going on your next social media marketing campaign. It’s typically meant to be used by larger organizations that have big audiences and lots of engagement happening. More »
When the App Store launched in 2008, Twitter apps quickly became a popular app category. The best Twitter client in those early days was Tweetie. How good was Tweetie? So good Twitter straight-up acquired the app in 2010 rather than trying to build its own. Tweetie 2, which launched in 2009, wasn’t just a breakthrough as a Twitter client. It also created the concept of pull-to-refresh. Today, pull-to-refresh is fundamental to the iPhone’s user experience and has spread to thousands upon thousands of apps, including Apple’s own mail client. Not bad for a measly Twitter client. –
There’s nothing terribly fancy about AllRecipes, but sometimes that’s best when you’re just trying to cook something. The app’s search is really what makes it worthwhile download: You can narrow recipes by distinct dietary needs or preferences. And the Dinner Spinner feature is the best solution for those “I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO EAT!” moments.

Interesting mail titles differentiate one advertisement from the other. This separates advertisements from the clutter. Differentiation is one factor that can make an advertisement successful in digital marketing because consumers are drawn to it and are more likely to view the advertisement.
Targeting, viewability, brand safety and invalid traffic: Targeting, viewability, brand safety and invalid traffic all are aspects used by marketers to help advocate digital advertising. Cookies are a form of digital advertising, which are tracking tools within desktop devices; causing difficulty, with shortcomings including deletion by web browsers, the inability to sort between multiple users of a device, inaccurate estimates for unique visitors, overstating reach, understanding frequency, problems with ad servers, which cannot distinguish between when cookies have been deleted and when consumers have not previously been exposed to an ad. Due to the inaccuracies influenced by cookies, demographics in the target market are low and vary (Whiteside, 2016). Another element, which is affected within digital marketing, is ‘viewabilty’ or whether the ad was actually seen by the consumer. Many ads are not seen by a consumer and may never reach the right demographic segment. Brand safety is another issue of whether or not the ad was produced in the context of being unethical or having offensive content. Recognizing fraud when an ad is exposed is another challenge marketers face. This relates to invalid traffic as premium sites are more effective at detecting fraudulent traffic, although non-premium sites are more so the problem (Whiteside, 2016).
There are direct benefits of social media in the form of greater market share and increased audiences. To increase these benefits technologies that better facilitate social media marketing has been developed; an example of this technology is the development of bots.

There is a very real biological basis for this behavior. The combination of social media pressure and an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain that helps us rationalize decisions, control impulsivity and make judgments, can contribute to offensive online posts.
